Celebrate Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month at the Trove. As you enter the Trove, check out the great exhibit of African American leaders, with biographies and memorabilia. Then enjoy the StoryWalk®, which features Ron’s Big Mission, written by Rose Blue and Corrine J. Naden and illustrated by Don Tate.

Ron's Big Mission is the story of how nine-year-old Ron McNair, later a real-life scientist and Challenger astronaut, desegregated his Lake City, South Carolina, public library in the 1950s through peaceful resistance. The StoryWalk®, which allows children to walk and read, will be up through March 1.

In addition, the Trove’s Cinema Sunday will present the Academy-award nominated Black Panther (PG-13) on February 17 at 2:00 p.m. and Akeelah and the Bee (PG) on February 24 at 2:00 p.m. Check our website for other titles.

Meet George Guidall

Save the date Sunday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. for a special afternoon with three-time Audie Award winner and White Plains resident, George Guidall. His audiobook recordings have been delighting listeners for over 20 years through more than 1,300 titles—from classics like Crime and Punishment, Frankenstein, The Iliad, Don Quixote, and Les Misérables to contemporary titles by Craig Johnson, Daniel Silva, Wally Lamb, Ursula Le Guin, and so many more. He’s widely recognized as the world’s most prolific audiobook narrator – and he’s our neighbor! Details to follow in March.

Make a Note: Closing Tuesday, Feb. 12

Please note that the Library will be closed on Tuesday, February 12th for Lincoln's Birthday. We will reopen with regular hours from 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13th.

Our external book drop, located to the left of our main entrance, will remain open for anyone looking to return materials while we're closed.

Open Media Lab for All Ages

Visit the Library's Edge Media Lab on Sunday, February 10th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and try out different gadgets and software, like our VR headsets and 3D printers. This is not a formal class, but rather an open session to observe some of the various digital technologies the library has to offer. For adults, teens, and grades 1+.

Slow Reading

“Slow reading describes my practice of looking at a text very closely in order to appreciate nuances of language and hence of meaning,” says Ellen Lambert, author (The Face of Love: Feminism and the Beauty Question) and White Plains resident, who holds a Ph.D. in English from Yale University. Lambert taught literature at Manhattan’s Dalton School for over 25 years (and intends to start a tutoring service for high school students.)

Interested in learning more about our Slow Reading book group? Join us on Monday, February 11th at 2:00 p.m. for the next session. Visit our website for more, including a scheduled list of readings.

Video Game Design Camp

During winter break, pre-teens in grades 4, 5, and 6 can learn about video game design using a variety of products and software applications. Some of the applications used will be Bloxels Builder and Alice 2. No equipment or prior knowledge is required, although being able to use a mouse and keyboard is a must. Participants must attend all four sessions from Tuesday, February 19th through Friday, February 22nd from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Registration is required; to register, visit our online calendar or call the Trove at (914) 422-1476.

AARP Tax-Aide is Back!

One of our most popular programs is back: the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free, individualized tax preparation for low-to moderate-income taxpayers—especially those 50 and older. Volunteers are trained to assist you in filing certain tax forms and schedules, including the Form 1040.

The program is offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis in Room B on the second floor. You will need to bring your important documents with you; here’s a list of what to have with you.

Interested in other locations? This locator will help you identify other organizations in Westchester that host the service.
