    Industry Codes

    Many business directories and statistics are arranged by numeric codes. The SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) system was created in the 1930s in the United States and assigned 4-digit numbers to industries. The 6-digit NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) is replacing the SIC system and is used to classify United States, Canadian and Latin American industries. Determining an industry's code is an important first step in research. These sources may help:

Current magazine and newspaper articles are an excellent source of industry information. The Library subscribes to hundreds of business magazines and newspapers, which are found in the Periodicals Department. Online articles can be found through the Online Research section of our website.
