"A  Sense of Place - The Art of Jerry Pinkney" on View in the Museum Gallery of the White Plains Public Library.

"A Sense of Place - The Art of Jerry Pinkney" will open in The Museum Gallery of The White Plains Public Library on Sunday, February 24th at 2pm, with a talk by the noted artist, who is one of America’s most celebrated book illustrators. A reception will mark the opening of the exhibition, which will be on view through April 24th. In addition to his illustrations, works showcasing the artist’s collaboration with his wife, author Gloria Jean Pinkney and paintings and photographs by his sons, Brian and Myles, will be on display.

Jerry Pinkney has been creating art for more than 35 years, and has over 80 picture books to his credit. He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including four Caldecott Honor Medals, four Coretta Scott King Awards and two Coretta Scott King Honor Awards. He has received five awards for a body of work, and was a United States nominee for the 1998 Hans Christian Anderson Illustration Medal. He has won four gold medals, four silver medals and the Hamilton King Award from the Society of Illustrators in New York City.

Pinkney has had over 30 one-man retrospectives at leading art venues ranging from the Art Institute of Chicago to the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. He has shown in over 100 group shows throughout the world. He has illustrated for a wide variety of clients, including National Geographic, the National Park Service and the U.S. Postal Service, where he served on the Citizen Stamp Advisory Committee from 1982 to 1992.

This year, Pinkney was invited by First Lady Laura Bush to illustrate and design the White House Christmas Program. A native of Philadelphia, he studied at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) where, in 1992, he received the Alumni Award. He has held professorships teaching art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY; the University of Delaware and the University at Buffalo, NY.

This exhibition is made possible with the assistance of the City of White Plains and The Friends of the White Plains Public Library. Museum Gallery hours are 10am to 9pm, Monday through Thursday; 10am to 6pm, Friday; 10am to 5pm, Saturday and 1pm to 5pm, Sunday.
