BARBARA WENGLIN SELECTED AS THE 2002 WINNER OF THE NEW YORK TIMES LIBRARIAN AWARD FOR WESTCHESTER COUNTY
Barbara
Wenglin, Adult Services Librarian at the White Plains Public Library, was
selected as the first winner of The New York Times Librarian Award for
Westchester County and honored at an awards reception at The Times on October
8th.
The award program, in its second year, was expanded to recognize one librarian from each participating county in the tri-state area who has demonstrated outstanding public service on a consistent basis. During the nomination period, The New York Times received more than 1,400 nominations for librarians from the general public. Essays completed by nominators included how the nominee improved the quality of their lives and that of the community, how she assisted in their research, inspired a love of literature and in general made the library a better place. Winners were chosen by a selection committee composed of leading library professionals from Connecticut, New Jersey and New York and representatives from The Times.
Mrs. Wenglin has been with the White Plains Public Library since 1977. Over the past two decades, she has guided the Library’s popular book discussion series featuring exploration of novels, short stories, biographies, poetry and film. She also works at the Library’s reference desk, coordinates classical music concerts and is responsible for selecting books for the adult fiction collection.
An honors graduate of Skidmore College, Mrs. Wenglin received a Fulbright grant to study French language and literature at the Sorbonne. She received her Masters in Library Science from the University of Arizona and was elected to Beta Phi Mu, the national library honor society. She lives in Scarsdale with her husband, Dr. Barry Wenglin."Family: Californian FB."
