THE WHITE PLAINS PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTS WORLD-CLASS, PRIZE-WINNING PERFORMANCE POETS AT CITY CENTER BARNES & NOBLE
As part of its annual
poetry series, Poetry Live!, the White Plains Public Library and local poet Eric
ZORK Alan will feature four award-winning performance poets on the third
Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm, from January through April at Barnes &
Noble, 230 Main Street, White Plains. Following each performance, the audience
is invited to interact with our guest poets and participate in a poetry Open Mic.
On January 20th, Michael Brown will be the featured poet. Brown's first published poem appeared in the premiere issue of Beyond Baroque in 1968 and his first book of poetry, Falling Wallendas was published in 1994. Brown holds a Ph.D. in English and Education from the University of Michigan where his dissertation, directed by Robert Hayden, was a literary history of the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance. A self-proclaimed "itinerant professor," Brown has been teaching for nearly 40 years, including five years of high school and stints at Michigan and Chicago State. He was a featured performer in the award-winning documentary SlamNation and has been called "the Jerry Garcia of performance poetry" by WBUR, the Boston affiliate of NPR. He currently teaches at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts and was responsible for bringing Slam Poetry to New England. Additional information available at http://michael.brown.name
Dawn Saylor will perform on February 17th. Saylor was one of the original spoken word poets to appear on HBO's "Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry" and has captained three teams all the way to the National Poetry Slam championships. She is considered to be one of the masters of the "group piece," or multi-voiced poem. Saylor is currently pursuing a degree in education from Goddard College's while helping to manage the Bowery Poetry Club, New York City's only club devoted entirely to poetry and spoken word. On March 17th, National Slam Champion Mike McGee joins us from San Jose, California.
