WHITE PLAINS LIBRARY FOUNDATION RECEIVES GRANT FROM NEW YORK STATE MUSIC FUND
WHITE PLAINS, New York, February 22, 2007 -- The White Plains Library Foundation announced today that it is the recipient of a grant from The New York State Music Fund ("The Fund") for its "Salute to Contemporary Music" series. The New York State Music Fund was created when the New York State Attorney General's Office resolved investigations against major record companies that had violated state and federal laws prohibiting "pay for play" (also called "payola").
The settlement agreement stipulated that funds paid by music businesses would support music education and appreciation for the benefit of New York State residents. The Attorney General's Office enlisted the services of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, one of the nation's largest and most experienced philanthropy services, to develop and manage the grant program.
"This is a great opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to enrich their lives through free cultural events at the Library," said White Plains Library Foundation President Judith Nevins. "Beginning in September 2007, we will offer performances and workshops for adults and children featuring artists representing a variety of genres, including folk, blues, jazz and gospel," she continued.
The White Plains Library Foundation was one of 218 successful grantees from a pool of 402 applications. Awards to the 218 grantees represent every region of New York State and range from $10,000 to $500.000.
The White Plains Library Foundation, incorporated in 1995, was created to secure funding for programs and services not provided through the Library's operating budget from the City of White Plains. In 1997 the Foundation began its first fund raising endeavor, a Centennial Campaign to raise $1 million to enhance programs and collections, establish an endowment, and complement the City of White Plains' planned capital project to renovate and expand the Children's Library. The Centennial Campaign was successfully completed in 2001, a Campaign for the Children's Library to raise an additional $750,000 was successful completed and The Trove opened to community acclaim in October 2005. The Foundation's fund raising efforts are currently focused on a variety of service projects. A list of corporate and individual contributors is available on the library's website at www.whiteplainslibrary.org
