The White Plains Library Foundation:
CREATING POWERFUL CHOICES

2006-2007

Foundation initiatives help us unleash the talents of today’s young readers and tomorrow’s leaders. For parents of children from birth-kindergarten, new reading readiness tools and programs will promote essential at-home learning activities. We offered a series of baby sign language workshops for the first time in fall 2006 with grant funding from Target, and additional funding will be needed to repeat them. In 2007 we’ll begin to offer after-school enrichment workshops for school-age children with a generous grant from the New York Life Foundation. Homework help services will continue to be made available, thanks to Foundation funding for onsite and online tutoring, currently used by over 6,000 children each year.

The White Plains Public Library is the ideal destination for an art exhibit, free concert, film or workshop. Foundation-sponsored events for 2006/07 will promote enjoyment of literature and the performing arts through series such as The Magic of Live Theater, Performance Poetry, and Family Fun Sundays. People can easily check the Library’s busy event schedule in the Foundation-sponsored newsletter distributed city-wide and mailed to donors every other month.

Planning for the future continues. The Foundation has established the nucleus of what will become a strong Endowment Fund to ensure stellar library services, and will continue to evaluate its role in relation to major planned capital improvements to library space. Projects under consideration include refurbishing public meeting rooms and gallery space and creating an exciting service area for young adults.

White Plains
Library Foundation

The Foundation was incorporated in 1995 to raise funds to help meet the long-range goals of the White Plains Public Library. In 1997 the Foundation began its first fund raising endeavor, a Centennial Campaign to raise $1 million to enhance programs and collections, establish an endowment, and complement the City’s planned capital project to renovate and expand the Children’s Library. The Centennial Campaign was successfully completed in 2001, a Campaign for the Children’s Library to raise an additional $750,000 was successfully completed and The Trove opened to community acclaim in October 2005. The Foundation’s fund raising efforts are currently focused on a variety of service projects. A list of corporate and individual contributors is available here.
